This professionally researched history is fully annotated and offers a comprehensive overview of the early Australian origins of the Yeaman family.
When Edinburgh shoemaker Charles Yeaman and his wife Euphemia, sailed from Scotland for Australia with their six young children in 1841, they could not have dreamt of the adventure that lay ahead. Their ship, the India caught fire and sank off the coast of South America. Their situation was dire, but fate saw them rescued, arriving soon after as new settlers in Victoria. They had lost everything, but the couple’s determination saw them go on to raise their family in the fledgling settlement of Port Phillip and the Victorian rural townships of Carlsruhe and Tennyson. They were also early pioneers of New Zealand. This publication is a history of the Yeaman family, from the somewhat eccentric life of their forebear George Yeaman, a gifted and celebrated equestrian of Edinburgh’s Royal Circus. It follows their journey through the golden age of Georgian Circus, the Scottish Enlightenment, and into the age of emigration, when they set off for lands unseen, literally half a world away. Encompassing a period of 250 years, this is a true story of the triumphs, the perils and the challenges that these early pioneers faced as they forged a new life in a new land, ‘Across that far horizon’. The family’s journey includes links to A.B. Facey, author of the Australian classic ‘A fortunate life’ and even HMAS Bounty mutineer, Fletcher Christian. The Yeaman family encompasses ordinary folk, as well as several extraordinary folk.
NOTE: This publication follows the author's direct line of the Yeaman family from 1777, offering more that simply a collection of names and dates, but biographical and chronological information. Illustrated with over 300 images, this publication will be of interest to anyone descended from the family lines of George Yeaman (B. 1773) and Mary (Young) Yeaman, and Charles and Euphemia Yeaman, and to anyone wishing to discover more about the lives of the colonial settlement of Victoria, Australia.
